Athens Area Chamber of Commerce Leads Local Workforce Push Through Athens Achieves

The Athens-Clarke County Commission approved a $3.3 million workforce support and development plan over two years funded by the federal American Rescue Plan. The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce received $2.3 million of that allocation to run the Athens Achieves initiative and build a pipeline that links local employers with education providers and county government offices.

Chamber Spearheads Pipeline

The chamber's plan centers on an online job portal, an apprenticeship program and the hiring of job navigators who will match residents with openings and connect them to support services. Athens Achieves also targets second-chance hiring for people returning from incarceration and works to raise third-grade reading levels as the base for later career readiness. Development work begins at the Athens Community Career Academy and draws on the University of Georgia plus the technical college system that serves ten surrounding counties.

These steps matter now because Athens businesses have reported ongoing difficulty filling skilled positions even as the county receives one-time federal dollars that must be spent within the two-year window. The commission's vote, which included a tie-breaking decision by the mayor on nearly $2 million of the chamber allocation, gives the chamber the lead role in turning those dollars into concrete hiring tools before the money expires.
