Athens Venues Discover First-Time Directors Telling Fresh Local Stories
Athens venues are turning to first-time directors for fresh stories drawn from the city's streets and history.
How we reported this

A new showcase series at the Greek Film Archive in central Athens opened this week with three short films by directors under 30, each rooted in neighbourhoods from Kypseli to Metaxourgeio.
The timing aligns with a broader push by local arts groups to back new voices after years of funding cuts that hit established studios harder than smaller crews working on digital projects.
Venues backing early work
Screenings run at the archive on Iera Odos and at the smaller Trianon cinema on Panepistimiou Street, where organisers added extra seats for the July 18 programme. Both spots sit within walking distance of film school campuses that supply many of the crews.
One film follows a delivery rider navigating traffic around Omonia Square, while another tracks a family argument in a Plaka apartment block during the August heat.
Numbers behind the push
The Greek Film Centre reported 42 first features submitted for its 2025 development grants, up from 29 the year before, with awards announced last month at 5,000 euros each. Ticket prices for the current series start at 6 euros, with half-price entry for students at the archive box office.
Viewers can check the archive website for the full schedule through the end of July or pick up printed guides at the Trianon lobby before the next double bill on July 22.
