Officials and Experts Highlight Athens Economy Drivers in Latest Assessments

Athens area employment rose by 1,600 positions compared with the prior year while the unemployment rate stood at 3.1 percent as of March 2024.

Those figures arrive as the local economy posted a record $9.2 billion annual impact in 2025. Officials and analysts have tied the performance to the University of Georgia and its health system, which together supply more than 15 percent of metro-area jobs.

University and Health Sector Contributions

The University of Georgia employs over 12,500 faculty and staff. Experts have described that workforce as the dominant engine behind both direct payroll and the broader multiplier effects captured in the $9.2 billion total. UGA Health has been cited alongside it as a stable source of positions in the health-care and social-assistance category, which counted 12,296 employees in recent tallies.

City and county leaders have noted that educational services overall support 21,300 jobs, reinforcing the same institutional base. Retail trade adds another 10,760 positions, rounding out the three largest sectors tracked in local data.

Startup and Tourism Activity

More than 100 active startups have been credited by development officials with an estimated $180 million contribution to gross domestic product. Tourism, ranked as the third-largest private industry, generated $310.17 million in direct domestic spending and supported 2,872 jobs while producing $21.24 million in tax revenue.

Median household income reached $62,897 in 2023, a 6.37 percent increase from 2022, with the cost-of-living index at 102.0. Officials have said these indicators reflect steady demand even as housing vacancy remains near 4 percent.

Analysts expect continued focus on matching workforce growth with available housing stock. They have pointed to existing sector strengths as the baseline for any further expansion planning.
