Athens Requires Households to Sort Waste, Raises Monthly Fees Six Euros

Changes for Residents in Specific Neighborhoods
Households in Kolonaki and Pangrati will receive new blue, brown and black bins by mid-September. Collection for organic waste will shift to twice-weekly morning pickups in those districts, while residual waste collection moves to afternoons. Residents in Plaka and Exarchia will see the same three-stream system but with fees calculated on the volume of residual waste collected, rather than a flat rate. Local advocates note that apartment buildings without space for three bins may need shared containers placed on sidewalks.
The city budget approved alongside the ordinance allocates 8.5 million euros for bin procurement, vehicle upgrades and public information campaigns through 2027. Council records show this sum comes from reallocating existing sanitation funds and a modest increase in the annual waste service charge. The average single-family home will pay an extra 72 euros per year, while larger apartment blocks will see the building fee rise by 180 euros annually, divided among units.
Implementation begins with a voluntary pilot in the 1st and 5th municipal districts in August. Full enforcement, including fines for improper sorting, starts in January 2027. The municipality will distribute printed guides door-to-door and hold neighborhood meetings in September to explain the new procedures.
