Athens City Council Approves Waste Management Overhaul, Changing Collection Schedules for All Households

Athens City Council voted on July 7 to adopt the Municipal Organic Waste Separation Ordinance, requiring all households to separate food scraps and yard waste from regular trash starting January 2027. The 28-11 decision reallocates existing sanitation department resources rather than adding new taxes.

The ordinance arrives as the city prepares its annual waste handling contracts with regional facilities outside Attica. Council records show current mixed-waste volumes have risen steadily since 2023, prompting the shift to meet national targets set under the 2025 circular economy framework.

Effects on household routines

Residents in districts such as Kypseli and Nea Smyrni will receive new brown bins alongside existing blue and green containers. Collection for organic material will occur twice weekly, while regular trash pickup moves to once a week. Local advocates note that families with small kitchens may need to adjust storage space for the additional bin.

Policy analysts say the change will alter costs for multi-family buildings that currently share single waste contracts. Building managers must now coordinate separate pickup schedules, which the legislation states will be enforced through updated municipal permits issued by the sanitation office.

According to the council's July budget summary, the program draws from a €2.8 million line item already approved for sanitation fleet upgrades. No additional resident fees appear in the document, though the government says the policy will produce savings on landfill tipping fees over three years.

Implementation begins with a six-month education period run by the city's environment department. Staff will distribute instructional materials door-to-door in all 129 municipal districts before enforcement starts. The next council review of collection data is scheduled for March 2028.
