Athens Delays New Parking Permit Rules Until 2027 for Central Districts

Officials project the first enforcement adjustments will reach drivers in Plaka and Psyrri by mid-2027 once new digital verification systems are installed at 42 locations.
Households in Exarcheia and Kypseli will receive renewal notices under the existing fee structure until December 2026. After that date, permit applications will require proof of residency updated through the municipal digital portal. Local advocates note that families relying on street parking near schools may face longer application processing times during the transition months.
Budget and Rollout Schedule
The 2026 city budget paper allocates €12.4 million for the enforcement technology and staff training required by the update. Municipal documents state that 65 percent of this amount will cover equipment purchases delivered between October 2026 and March 2027. The remaining funds support public information sessions scheduled in each affected district starting September 2026.
Policy analysts say the phased approach means most residents will encounter the revised rules only when their current permits expire. Applications submitted before 31 December 2026 will be processed under the prior criteria, according to the ordinance text.

The municipality will publish district-by-district start dates on its website by 15 August 2026. Residents can submit questions through the existing citizen service line or at the four municipal offices located in Syntagma, Omonia, Patisia and Ampelokipi. The government says full system activation across all eight districts will occur by September 2027.
