Athens runners completed the July 8 midweek 5K loop through Pedion tou Areos in an average time of 24 minutes 18 seconds, with the top finisher crossing the line at 17 minutes 41 seconds.
The surge in entries follows the opening of new marked paths along the park perimeter last month, giving residents a safe evening option after work. Organisers recorded 287 finishers, up from 214 on the same date in 2025, and noted that more than half the field ran under 25 minutes for the first time since the series began in 2023.
Participants started at the park entrance on Alexandras Avenue, looped the central green twice, then finished near the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos. A separate group tackled the steeper 8K climb on Lycabettus Hill the following evening, where the lead runner posted 38 minutes 12 seconds. Both events were organised by the Athens Running Club and timed by the municipal sports department.
Entry data released on Friday shows 312 athletes registered for the two sessions combined, with 41 percent listing Kolonaki or Exarcheia as their home neighbourhood. The club charged 8 euros per runner, with proceeds directed to trail maintenance on the hill path.
The next session is scheduled for July 15 at 19:30, again starting at Pedion tou Areos. Runners can register through the club website or at the information kiosk near the park café until 18:00 on the day. Those seeking longer distances are directed to the monthly 10K that begins at the Panathenaic Stadium on July 20, with bib collection open from 08:00 that morning.
