Athens' 46 Running Events: Your 2026 Beginner's Guide
With 46 running and cycling events within 80 km of central Athens this year, here’s what you need to know to lace up and join the action.
How we reported this

Athens has long been a city of runners. The historic marathon route from the battlefield of Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium, the finish line of the 1896 Olympic marathon, draws thousands every November. But in 2026, the city's running scene is more accessible than ever for beginners.
According to the events aggregator Trainerday, Athens hosts 46 running and cycling events within 80 km of the city centre this year. That includes major races like the Athens Half Marathon in March and the Poseidon Athens Half Marathon in April. For someone who has never pinned on a race bib, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. But organisers and city officials are making a concerted push to lower the barrier to entry.
Free guided sessions at the Stavros Niarchos Park
One of the most beginner-friendly entry points is the SNFCC Running Team. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre offers free, guided outdoor training sessions in Stavros Niarchos Park on the southern edge of the city. Sessions are open to anyone aged 15 and older, with a maximum of 25 participants per session. Teens under 18 need a guardian's consent form. There is no cost, no membership fee, and no prior experience required, just a pair of trainers and a willingness to show up.
The SNFCC programme is designed to build confidence in novice runners while providing structure for those who have some experience but lack a training plan. The guided sessions are led by coaches who adjust pace and distance to the group’s ability, meaning a complete beginner can run alongside someone training for a half-marathon.
Short races and mountain runs for the first-timer
For those ready to test their fitness in a race setting, the calendar offers a spread of distances that reward participation over speed. The 49th Athens Health Run is scheduled for February 8, 2026, at Schinias, a coastal area northeast of the city. Distances include 21.1 km (a half-marathon), 10 km, and a 5 km option, the 5 km is ideal for a first race. The event has been running for nearly five decades and has a reputation for being well-organised and welcoming to new entrants.
Later in the spring, the 10th Efklios Mountain Run on Hymettus mountain on March 29, 2026, offers trail distances up to 46 km. Beginners can opt for shorter distances on the same course; the event page on Run-Events.gr lists multiple route lengths. Trail running on Hymettus requires trail shoes and a bit of hill work, but the short distances are manageable for anyone who has built a base of three to five kilometres on road.
The crown jewel of the Athenian running calendar remains the Athens Marathon 'The Authentic' on November 8-9, 2025 (the 2026 edition has not yet been announced, but the event typically repeats annually). The 42.195 km course follows the route from the Marathon battlefield to the Panathenaic Stadium. Registration is via athensauthenticmarathon.gr. For a first marathon, this is one of the most dramatic courses in the world, but race organisers recommend having at least 16 weeks of consistent training before attempting the full distance.
For beginners, the key is to start small. The SNFCC free sessions and the 5 km distance at the Athens Health Run require no special gear beyond comfortable shoes. As the city pulses with running events through 2026, the hardest step is the first one out the door.
