Athens stages more than 40 ticketed and free events this weekend, beginning with late-night openings at four state museums on Friday and running through Sunday evening markets in three districts.
July attendance at cultural venues already exceeds last year's figures by 18 percent, driven by extended daylight hours and the start of the annual summer program calendar that runs until September 15.
The National Archaeological Museum on Patission Street adds two extra hours on Saturday night, while the Acropolis Museum on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street hosts a 9 p.m. guided walk limited to 120 people. Both sites sit within walking distance of Syntagma Square, where the City of Athens cultural office has installed a temporary stage for brass ensembles on Saturday afternoon.
Monastiraki Square hosts its weekly Sunday flea market from 8 a.m., with stalls extending along Ifestou Street and into the Psyrri side streets. Vendors report average daily sales of 2,800 euros per stall during the summer months, according to the local traders association.
The same stretch offers cold coffee at 2.50 euros and grilled souvlaki plates at 4 euros from fixed kiosks that remain open until midnight.
Advance reservations for the Acropolis Museum evening slot close at 6 p.m. on Friday through the museum website. Public transport tickets valid for 90 minutes cost 1.20 euros and cover Metro lines to all listed venues. Those arriving by car can use the 600-space lot beneath Syntagma Square, which fills by 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
