Athens Hosts Markets, Museums, Performances July 12-13

Athens opens its weekend calendar with three main outdoor programmes on July 12 and 13 that draw both residents and short-stay visitors to the city centre.

Summer heat and recent global shipping disruptions have pushed more people toward local, low-cost activities rather than long trips. City officials report that attendance at central cultural sites rose 18 percent in the first half of July compared with the same period last year.

Two venues anchor the schedule. Technopolis in Gazi runs its Saturday night open-air film series with screenings beginning at 21:00 and tickets priced at 8 euros. The National Garden, entered from Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, hosts a Sunday farmers market from 08:00 to 14:00 where local producers sell cheese, honey and vegetables directly from stalls.

Last season’s equivalent events recorded 4,200 visitors across the two days, according to figures released by the City of Athens culture office. This weekend organisers added extra shade structures and water stations after complaints about midday temperatures exceeding 34 degrees.

Markets and music

Plaka’s weekly Sunday street fair along Adrianou Street features 35 licensed vendors selling second-hand records and handmade jewellery. The fair runs from 10:00 until 16:00 and requires no entry fee. Nearby, the Benaki Museum on Koumbari Street extends its hours until 23:00 on Saturday for a ticketed evening of live rebetiko performances at 12 euros per person.

Practical steps

Visitors should arrive at Technopolis before 20:30 for seating and carry cash for the National Garden market, which does not accept cards at every stall. The city’s metro runs until 02:00 on both nights, with Syntagma station serving as the main interchange for all three locations.
