Athens added 27 kilometres of designated cycling lanes to its road network between 2022 and early 2026, according to figures from the Athens Urban Transport Organisation, and the city is not finished yet. For families who have been waiting for a safe moment to try cycling together, that moment is now.
The timing matters. July heat is brutal in Athens — the National Observatory recorded a mean June temperature this year that ranked among the three highest since reliable records began — which means early-morning rides before 9 a.m. are not just pleasant but necessary. Families and beginners who plan around the heat, stick to shaded or sea-breeze routes, and choose flat terrain will find Athens far more cyclable than its chaotic reputation suggests.
Where to Start: The Routes That Actually Work for New Riders
The stretch along the Flisvos Marina coastal path in Paleo Faliro remains the single most family-friendly cycling corridor in the greater Athens area. The path runs roughly 5.5 kilometres along the waterfront, is largely separated from motor traffic, and is almost completely flat. On weekend mornings it fills with parents pushing cargo bikes and children on training-wheel bikes. The Flisvos Sport Club, based at the marina, rents bicycles from €4 per hour for standard city bikes and offers helmets at no extra charge — a detail that matters if you are travelling light.
Further north, the Pedion tou Areos park in the Exarcheia neighbourhood offers a different kind of cycling experience. The park's internal paths loop through mature pine and plane trees, keeping temperatures measurably lower than surrounding streets. The paths are unpaved in sections, which some beginners find easier on their joints, though it does rule out road bikes with thin tyres. The Athens Cycling Club, which has operated out of a base near Alexandras Avenue since 2019, runs a free beginner group ride through the park every Saturday at 7:30 a.m. through the summer months. Participants are asked to pre-register via the club's website.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Kallithea is another underused option. The wide, gently sloping paths through the SNFCC parklands are shared with pedestrians but are wide enough that conflicts are rare, and the route from the park down toward the Faliro Delta connects to the coastal path, giving confident beginners a 10-kilometre round trip that feels genuinely rewarding.
Gear, Safety and the Practical Details
Greek road law requires cyclists under 12 to wear a helmet; it is strongly recommended for adults, though not legally mandated on dedicated paths. A basic roadworthy city bike from shops along Ermou Street or in the Monastiraki area typically costs between €180 and €350 new, with second-hand options available at weekend markets in Thisio from around €60. The city's public bike-share scheme, operated under the Athens Bike contract renewed in March 2025, offers day passes for €3 and includes 90 stations concentrated inside the Attiki ring road.
Hydration is non-negotiable in July. Cyclists should carry at least 750ml of water per hour of riding and plan routes around fountains — Pedion tou Areos has four functioning public fountains as of this month. Sun exposure on open routes like the coastal path peaks between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., so the window for comfortable family riding is genuinely narrow in midsummer.
The Athens Municipal Authority has signalled that Phase 3 of the city's cycling infrastructure plan, which includes a protected lane connecting Syntagma Square to Monastiraki and eventually toward Thissio, is scheduled for completion by December 2026. When it opens, it will link the historic centre to the existing coastal network for the first time. Until then, families are best served by starting at Flisvos, building confidence over two or three weekend sessions, and working gradually toward the longer city-park routes. A local medical professional or physiotherapist can advise on saddle fit and posture, particularly for older riders or anyone with joint concerns — small adjustments at the start save considerable discomfort later.
