Top walking trails rated by distance and difficulty
Athens park officials have assigned distance and difficulty ratings to seven local trails to guide residents seeking outdoor fitness options this summer.
How we reported this
Seven walking trails across Athens parks received official distance and difficulty ratings this month from the city’s parks division. The designations cover routes ranging from 1.2 kilometers at easy grade to 8.4 kilometers at strenuous level.
July heat has pushed more residents toward shaded or elevated paths rather than midday street walks, according to foot-traffic counters installed at park entrances last year. The ratings arrive ahead of the annual summer wellness campaign run by the Municipality of Athens, which promotes early-morning and late-evening exercise to avoid peak temperatures.
Philopappou Hill now lists a 2.8-kilometer moderate loop that starts at the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street and climbs past the Hill of the Muses monument before descending toward the Acropolis entrance gate. Nearby, the National Garden offers a 1.9-kilometer easy circuit that begins at the Zappeion Hall side entrance, passes the duck pond and exits near the Parliament building on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue.
City data released June 28 shows 47,300 recorded visits to these two sites between January and May 2026, a 19 percent rise over the same period in 2025. The parks division spent €82,000 on new signage and surface repairs completed in late May.
Difficulty levels and access points
Lycabettus Hill carries a 3.4-kilometer difficult rating because of its 220-meter elevation gain along the main stair-and-path route from Aristippou Street. Hikers can start at the Kolonaki neighborhood funicular base or the gravel service road off Sarantapichou Street. Pedion tou Areos park received a 4.1-kilometer moderate designation on its perimeter loop, which begins at the Exarcheia-side gate on Alexandras Avenue and circles the central avenue of plane trees before returning via the military hospital boundary.
Trail maps and updated difficulty cards are posted at each park kiosk and available on the Municipality of Athens website. Entry remains free at all listed sites.
Practical steps for first-time users
Residents can begin with the National Garden loop before attempting steeper routes. Morning visits before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m. reduce sun exposure on exposed sections. Water refill stations operate at the Philopappou and Lycabettus trailheads year-round. Anyone with joint concerns should check the easy-rated garden circuit first and consult a local physician before increasing distance or grade.
