Athens Beaches Guide | Vouliagmeni, Glyfada & Athenian Riviera
Athens's beaches are a revelation for visitors who don't expect a major European capital to offer beach swimming within 30 minutes of the city centre — but the Athenian Riviera stretching south along the Saronic Gulf coast delivers a string of blue-flag beaches, beach clubs, seaside restaurants, and coastal swimming spots that make summer in Athens a genuinely pleasurable urban beach experience.
Vouliagmeni is the most celebrated beach destination on the Athenian Riviera — a sophisticated coastal suburb 25km south of Athens whose beaches and beach clubs attract the city's wealthiest residents and most discerning international visitors. Astir Beach (operated by the Four Seasons) delivers the most luxurious beach club experience, with sunbed service, pool access, and an outstanding seafood restaurant. Lake Vouliagmeni — a unique brackish thermal lake formed in an ancient cave system that partially collapsed — offers year-round swimming in 22–29°C spring-fed water with remarkable visibility and therapeutic mineral properties.
The bus and metro connections from central Athens to the coastal suburbs are excellent and inexpensive, making beach days accessible without a car. The stretch from Alimos through Glyfada to Vouliagmeni offers progressively better beaches as you move south, with the free public beaches of Glyfada and Kavouri providing acceptable alternatives to the paid beach clubs for budget travellers. Our guide covers every beach from Faliro to Cape Sounion with access, facilities, water quality, and the best coastal restaurants for lunch or sundowner drinks.
