Kolonaki: Athens' Elegant Uptown Village
Kolonaki occupies the slopes of Lycabettus Hill with an air of confident elegance that distinguishes it from Athens' more democratic districts. This is where Athenian professionals, diplomats, and intellectuals have long gathered in pavement cafés along Tsakalof Street and Skoufa Street, conducting the city's cultural conversations over freddo espresso and afternoon newspapers. The neighbourhood's name derives from a small ancient column — a kolonaki — discovered here during construction in the 19th century, and it has retained an aristocratic character ever since, with embassies, designer boutiques, and some of Athens' finest private galleries clustered in its shaded streets.
The Benaki Museum on Vassilissis Sofias Avenue is Kolonaki's cultural crown, housing one of Greece's most comprehensive collections of Hellenic art spanning five thousand years from prehistoric times through the 20th century. The Byzantine and Christian Museum occupies a neoclassical mansion nearby, while the Cycladic Art Museum presents one of the world's finest collections of prehistoric Aegean sculpture in a purpose-built modern space. Ascending Lycabettus itself — either on foot through pine-scented paths or by funicular — rewards visitors with the city's finest panorama, encompassing the Acropolis, Piraeus port, and on clear days the island of Aegina floating in the Saronic Gulf.
Evening in Kolonaki has its own particular rhythm. Aperitivo hour sees the neighbourhood's outdoor seating fill with well-dressed Athenians sharing mezedes and ouzo, before dinner services begin at the area's accomplished restaurants. The neighbourhood's small cinema screens art house films, while Dexameni Square — a former reservoir converted to a charming urban plaza — provides the neighbourhood's most relaxed gathering point. Kolonaki's weekend morning café culture, when Athenian families linger over breakfast from neighbourhood bakeries, captures a quality of urban life that the city does exceptionally well.
