Cape Sounion Day Trip from Athens: Temple of Poseidon
Perched on a dramatic headland 70km south of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is one of Greece's most powerful ancient sites — white marble columns rising above the Aegean at the exact point where the sea and sky seem to meet. Sunset here ranks among the most spectacular in the Mediterranean.
Getting There
Bus (KTEL) — departs Pedion tou Areos (near Areos Park) or Akademia Platonos. Journey: 1.5-2 hours, every 1.5 hours. €6.80 each way. Coastal route is more scenic.
Drive or taxi — 1 hour via the scenic coastal road (E75 south through Vouliagmeni and Varkiza). Hire a car or book a half-day private taxi (€60-80 return).
The Temple
Built circa 444 BC during the Golden Age of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon commands the cape 60 metres above the sea. Look for Lord Byron's name carved into the stone — he visited in 1810 and couldn't resist. Open daily 9am-sunset. Entry: €10 adults.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset is the classic time — watch the sun drop into the Aegean between the columns. Arrive 1.5 hours before sunset to explore before the light fades. Go mid-week in summer to avoid coach tour crowds.
