Delphi Day Trip from Athens: Oracle Site, Museum & Mountain Views
Delphi, the ancient sanctuary of Apollo and home of the most famous oracle in the ancient world, sits 180 kilometres northwest of Athens on the slopes of Mount Parnassus — a 2.5-hour drive or 3-hour KTEL bus from Liossion terminal that repays every minute. The ancient Greeks believed Delphi to be the navel (omphalos) of the world, and standing in the sanctuary with the Phaedriades cliffs rising above and the Pleistos Valley dropping toward the Gulf of Corinth below, it's not hard to understand why. The archaeological site contains the Temple of Apollo, the Theatre (remarkably intact), and the Stadium at the top — the highest point of the site with extraordinary views. The Delphi Archaeological Museum houses some of Greece's finest ancient sculpture, including the bronze Charioteer, one of the best-preserved classical bronzes in existence. Allow 4–5 hours for the site and museum together. Stay overnight in Delphi village to visit at opening time before day-tripper crowds arrive.
