Hydra Island Day Trip from Athens: The Car-Free Greek Island Paradise
Hydra is the most seductive island you can visit on a day trip from Athens — 65 kilometres southwest of Piraeus, 1.5 hours by high-speed hydrofoil (Hellenic Seaways), and entirely free of motor vehicles. On Hydra, donkeys carry luggage, water taxis ferry visitors between beaches, and the only sounds are footsteps, boat engines, and the Aegean wind. The island has attracted artists, writers, and celebrities for decades — Leonard Cohen lived here, as did Henry Miller and Charmian Clift. The harbour town is Instagram-perfect: elegant stone mansions rising from the waterfront and Venetian-influenced architecture that has changed remarkably little since the 18th century. Swim at Vlychos or Kamini beaches (20-minute walks from the port), hike to the monastery at the island's summit for panoramic Saronic Gulf views. Hydra is at its best from May to early June and September to October. Book the Hellenic Seaways hydrofoil from Piraeus online in advance, especially for weekends.
