Athens allocated 4.8 million euros last month for renovations at two college-level sports complexes, with work already underway at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens site on Panepistimiou Street.
The projects arrive as Greece prepares for the 2027 European University Games, prompting local authorities to accelerate upgrades that had sat on planning boards since 2023. City records show the budget covers new track surfaces, lighting systems and seating expansions that directly serve student athletes from NKUA and nearby Panteion University.
The NKUA facility on Panepistimiou Street will gain a refurbished indoor hall and an adjacent weight room scheduled for completion by October. Three blocks east, the Panteion University grounds near Syngrou Avenue receive a new multi-purpose court and updated locker blocks, part of a joint program with the Athens municipal sports department. Both locations sit within walking distance of major metro stops, easing access for students commuting from Exarchia and Pangrati.
City engineering reports list the NKUA track resurfacing at 1.9 million euros and the Panteion court addition at 1.4 million euros, with the remaining funds earmarked for safety fencing and drainage. Construction crews began work on July 2 and expect the first phase to finish before the September semester starts.
Student teams can register for the new training slots through their university athletic offices starting August 15. The municipal sports department will publish updated schedules on its website and at the OAKA information desk in Marousi once the first sections reopen. Athletes planning to use the sites should check for temporary closures posted at the Panepistimiou Street entrance.
