Athens runners and walkers have at least seven organized fitness events to choose from between this weekend and mid-October, a surge in community-based exercise programming that local organizers say reflects a post-pandemic desire for low-cost, social movement.
Starting Saturday, July 12, the Athens Area Community Foundation kicks off its annual “Move for More” charity walk series at Bishop Park, located at 705 Sunset Drive. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and includes a 1-mile family walk and a 3-mile timed route. Registration is $15 for adults and free for children under 12.
Trail runs and twilight miles
The count of registered participants for “Move for More” has already hit 340, up from 220 in the same period last year, according to registration data shared by the foundation. Proceeds go to local food-access programs, including the Athens School District weekend backpack program, which serves roughly 1,100 students per month.
On Saturday, August 16, the Athens Trail Network will host its third annual “Twilight on the Trail” run at Sandy Creek Park, 400 Bob Holman Road. The 5K begins at 7:30 p.m. on the Lake Loop Trail. Entry fee is $25 if registered by August 1; $30 after. The route has about 180 feet of elevation gain, a detail organizers say appeals to trail runners looking for a challenge close to town.
“We’ve had people come from Winterville, Watkinsville, even Winder for this one,” said Travis Moore, a volunteer trail coordinator. “It’s not a huge race, we cap it at 300, but it’s got a community feel you don’t get at a big road 5K.”
Dance, dogs and a fall finale
A newer entry is the “Zumba for a Cause” event scheduled for Saturday, September 13, at the Miriam Moore Community Center, 125 Holiday Drive. Hosted by Athens-Benefit Dance Collective, the hour-long session runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and costs a suggested $10 donation. All proceeds support the Clarke County Youth Mental Health First Aid program, which trained 48 school staff and parents last year.
For those who prefer to run with their dogs, the Athens Canine Rescue “Paws on the Pavement” 5K returns on Sunday, October 5, starting at the College Avenue entrance to the UGA Health Sciences Campus. Registration is $20 for individuals, $25 with a dog entry, and includes a bandana for each canine participant. Last year the event drew 212 people and 87 dogs, organizers said.
The season’s biggest draw is expected to be the Athens Heart & Sole Half Marathon and 5K on Saturday, October 18, which starts and finishes at the Classic Center, 300 North Thomas Street. The half-marathon course winds through the Boulevard Historic District and past the Tree That Owns Itself on Dearing Street. Race director Amanda Porter said registration is currently at 780 runners, on pace to top last year’s total of 920. Entry fees range from $45 for the 5K to $85 for the half. The event benefits the Athens Heart Health Fund, which has distributed $130,000 in free cardiac screenings since 2022.
For anyone looking to get moving without a race bib, the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department offers free “Walk & Talk” groups every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Lay Park, 297 Hoyt Street. No registration required. Just show up and walk.
