Enrollment in Athens high school track and field squads climbed to 1,450 participants by the end of June 2026, up from 1,100 the previous year, according to records kept by the Hellenic Athletic Federation.
The increase arrives as families seek low-cost outlets for teenagers amid rising living expenses in central districts and as municipal budgets allocate modest grants for after-school sports. City officials note that similar jumps occurred in 2019 before the pandemic interrupted routines, yet the current wave shows stronger retention rates in working-class areas.
At the Municipal Sports Center on Mesogeion Avenue in the Kypseli district, coaches from the local high school share the 400-meter track with the Kypseli Athletic Club three afternoons a week. Students from nearby 1st Lyceum of Kypseli run interval sessions alongside adult members who pay an annual 120-euro fee for access. A short walk away in the Exarcheia neighborhood, the Exarcheia Youth Sports Association runs weekly relay drills on a converted schoolyard off Themistokleous Street, drawing 80 teenagers from three nearby lyceums. These arrangements rely on shared equipment rather than new construction, keeping costs below 40 euros per participant for the season.
Both sites opened expanded hours in May after the city approved a 25,000-euro pilot fund for joint school-club use. Parents supply water and first-aid kits while the clubs maintain the lanes. The model avoids large capital projects and instead stitches existing facilities together.
City data released July 8 shows that 62 percent of this summer’s high school athletes live within two kilometers of their training site, cutting transport costs that previously reached 15 euros per round trip on public buses.
Families interested in the fall term can sign up at either the Kypseli center or the Exarcheia association office between August 1 and August 15. Spots fill on a first-come basis, with priority given to students already enrolled in the participating lyceums. Coaches recommend bringing a recent medical certificate and a 30-euro deposit to secure a place before the September start of league meets.
